Stairs in a house are not only a connection between floors. This is an important element of the decor, visible from a distance. The choice of these specific ones is dictated by the needs of the building and its inhabitants. When browsing through the offers of wooden stairs, you may come across stringer stairs. What is this?
Stairs with stringers – the most important information
The definition of stringer stairs indicates primarily the presence of stringers, i.e. two beams between which the treads are attached. They constitute a sufficient structure that no additional load-bearing elements are required. The functionality and elegance of stringer stairs make them a popular choice for both classic and modern single-family homes.
Installing a balustrade on stringer stairs is a matter of choice. Although building regulations do not require it, it is better to install a balustrade wherever children or elderly people live. For safety and comfort of use. Stringer stairs go well with wooden or glass balustrades.
Why is it worth choosing stringer stairs?
- they take up little space;
- they are quite easy to assemble due to the small number of structural elements;
- they give the interior a feeling of lightness;
- they are comfortable to use;
- they are one of the safest types of home stairs;
- they fit both classic (string stairs with risers) and modern (openwork stringer stairs) interiors.
Stringer stairs – construction
The character of stringer stairs is determined by their construction. They are constructed in such a way that the treads are mounted between two parallel beams. These beams – stringers – constitute the main load-bearing element of such stairs. They take the entire load of the wooden stringer staircase structure and do not require the use of reinforced concrete support. Stair stringers are most often made of wood or steel. Then they constitute an elegant and fashionable combination with wooden treads.

Self-supporting stringer stairs
This type of stairs does not require attachment to the walls. It is an independent structure, composed of treads and stringers, which is mounted to the floor and ceiling. They look exceptionally good in large, open spaces. Among the self-supporting stringer stairs, there are those that have risers and those that do not – in such cases we talk about openwork stairs. Let’s take a closer look at the characteristics of both of them.
Stringer stairs with risers
In other words: full stringer stairs, carpet stairs or built-in stairs. Each step consists of a tread and a riser, i.e. a vertical element connecting the steps. The tread and riser can be the same color or contrasting. For example, choosing a white riser for a step in a natural wooden color is quite popular. The advantage of stairs with risers is the possibility of using the space underneath them, as long as they are adjacent to the wall, creating a corner that can be built on. Self-supporting stringer stairs do not require mounting against a wall.
Openwork stringer stairs
The second option is no usage of riser. In this way, we obtain openwork stairs, i.e. with empty space between the treads. The element connecting the steps are then the stringers, located on both sides of the flight of stairs or – in the case of stairs adjacent to the wall – on the outside of the flight. The greatest advantages of this construction include light transmission and a feeling of lightness.
Stringer stairs – price
Stringer stairs are sometimes cheaper than other structures due to the relatively small number of components. Their price is influenced by, among other things:
- largeness ‒ more steps automatically mean a higher total cost;
- type ‒ for example, winder stringer stairs will be slightly more expensive than straight ones;
- angle of inclination of the stairs ‒ a gentler angle of inclination makes the treads deeper, which may result in higher project costs.
That’s why we prepare an individual quote for each of our clients. This is a fair solution for both the customer and the manufacturer. This is especially true because our stairs are made to order, so each time they are a unique product, the cost of which can only be estimated based on a specific project.
