Wooden stairs for a small house

When choosing wooden interior stairs, we are guided by various factors: material, appearance, and – especially in the case of small houses – size. Stairs in a small house can also be beautiful and functional. You just need to choose the right ones, and we will be happy to help you and advise you which ones will work best.

How to choose stairs for a small house?

In a small home, every square meter is valuable, so saving space wherever possible is key. Also in the stairwell. Small homeowners should choose stairs that take up relatively little space and that can be individually adapted to the available space. For example, turn the staircase so that it uses space that residents need less, e.g. part of the living room or hallway, and thus does not interfere with everyday use.

If the small size of your house or apartment also means relatively little access to sunlight, choose openwork stairs. Their design allows light to pass through, so you can brighten up a dark staircase.

Openwork stairs are also perfect as stairs for a small apartment, for example one with a mezzanine where a bedroom or office is located.

What you need are custom-made wooden stairs. By ordering them from a manufacturer, for example from our company SOWOSZ, you will receive a product tailored to your home. We will take precise measurements and determine the optimal technical parameters of the treads so that they fit perfectly into the interior.

We encourage you to use our wooden stairs configurator, which allows you to easily send us the dimensions needed to prepare an offer and visualization.

In the configurator, you can specify the type of stairs and provide key parameters such as length and width, opening size, height from floor to ceiling, and ceiling thickness. You can also decide whether the stairs should have risers.

Based on the data you provide, we will prepare a visualization for you that will help you visualize the appearance of the stairs before you decide to order them.

Interior stairs that take up little space

The specific type of stairs will depend on the layout of the building. In some homes, a straight staircase will be a good choice, while in others – one with a bottom winder. The most important thing is to make the best use of the available space. Don’t have a designer? You can count on the support of our advisors. Thanks to many years of experience in installing interior stairs and feedback from our customers, we really know what we’re doing.

Wooden stairs that take up little space include:

  • Winder stairs ‒ thanks to the change of direction, we can optimally use the available space, for example by directing the lower flight in such a way as to functionally design the space under the stairs. If we are dealing with built-in stairs, the space underneath them can also be built-in and used, for example, as a storage space or a small wardrobe. In the case of openwork winder stairs, the corner underneath them may have a more decorative character. A small chest of drawers, a sofa, or a potted plant are common design choices among our clients.
  • Goose step stairs ‒ although they are most often chosen as attic stairs, they are sometimes installed as stairs for a small apartment. They take up very little space, so they can also be used in homes with relatively few square meters. Their minimalist look makes them a popular choice for modern homes, such as timber-frame homes.
  • Steep (Miller) stairs ‒ ideal for very small spaces, for example apartments with a mezzanine. They resemble a ladder equipped with a balustrade. Practical, but also aesthetic, if – as in our case – they are made of high-quality raw materials and with the greatest attention to detail.
  • Straight stairs ‒ although they are not immediately associated with interior stairs that take up little space, it is worth including them here because they are perfect for narrow rooms. It sometimes happens that in small houses we have a rather long and narrow corridor – then a straight staircase will be the ideal solution.

Remember that when designing internal stairs, you must adhere to the rules imposed by building law. These concern, among other things, the minimum usable width of the stairs or the maximum height of individual steps. All this to ensure the safety of people using the stairs in a small house.
