Designing stairs requires taking into account many factors that will determine the final shape of the structure. Individual parameters must be selected in this way that they will ensure comfort and safety for people using the stairs, while also adhering to the technical requirements set out above. Today we’ll show you how to calculate wooden stairs ,which you can then order via our website sowosz.com
How to calculate stairs?
Technical requirements resulting from the regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure help in correctly calculating stairs. There you will find, among other things, information about the maximum height of steps and the permissible number of steps in a flight. We have collected the most important information about the dimensions of stairs for your home in a separate article.
The parameters that must be taken into account are:
- angle of inclination of stairs;
- step height;
- tread depth;
- flight width;
- number of treads in a flight.
How to calculate stairs – calculator
There is a universal formula to use when calculating the stairs for a house:
2 h + s = 60-65 cm.
What do the different symbols in this equation mean? H to is the height of the step and s is its width. The result of multiplying the step height by 2 and adding the width should be between 60 and 65 cm.
The starting point for such calculations is always the height of the floor, i.e. the distance for which the stairs are to be a connecting element. We need to divide this value by the step height to find out how many steps need to be designed. The results obtained must be compared with the guidelines of the Minister of Infrastructure and we will make sure that our stairs will meet all standards.

How to calculate winder stairs?
We talk about winder stairs when, when climbing them, you change the original direction of movement. Depending on where the turn is located, we can distinguish stairs with a bottom or upper winding, and depending on the direction we turn, we can distinguish right- or left-turn stairs.
Customers who have limited space often choose winder stairs. How to calculate this type of stairs?
There may be a few more issues here than in the case of straight (single-flight) stairs. To determine the number of steps, we use the same formula 2 h + s = 60-65 cm, starting with the exact determination of H, i.e. the height of the storey. We will divide the H value by the height of the step and we will get the desired number of steps in our single-family house or two-story apartment. The question of how many spiral stairs should be built to ensure safe and comfortable use may pose a problem. Using the same criteria, the turn angle must also be determined and the results finally compared with legal requirements.
How to calculate single flight stairs?
Single flight, i.e. straight. Stairs that connect two floors with one flight of treads. To calculate them, it is best to use the formula we presented above. Try to be precise when measuring floor heights. This is a key output value, so it’s better not to make a mistake. You can use traditional tools like a tape measure, or you can use a laser meter, called a rangefinder. Not only is it more accurate, but it is also much more convenient to use.
How to calculate two-flight stairs?
In this category of stairs we can distinguish those in which some of the steps have different dimensions than the others. These steps create a turn that allows you to change the direction of the stairs. But two-flight stairs are also stairs with a landing. Then, it is on this platform that the direction of climbing (or descending) the stairs is changed. In the latter case, if we are dealing with a landing, it will also be necessary to determine the height from the lower floor to the landing and from the landing to the upper floor. You will also need to decide whether the landing itself will still have a step or not. For more advanced calculations, you can of course count on the help of experts, i.e. a company – such as ours – that will build the stairs for you and help you take all the necessary measurements.
How to calculate straight stairs and what next?
You don’t have to calculate the height of the steps, the angle of inclination or the number of landings yourself. To meet the needs of our clients, we have simplified the entire process to a minimum.
Just enter the basic dimensions of the room in our online form – and we will take care of the rest. Based on this, we will prepare a free offer for you, which includes:
- detailed technical parameters of the stairs,
- tailored design,
- and 3D visualization in the form of transparent screenshots.
Thanks to this, you can easily see what your future stairs will look like – without the need to use any programs or applications.
You don’t have to worry about any calculations – we’ll do everything for you.
