One of the key criteria when designing wooden stairs is the comfort of use. In single-family homes, it is common for household members to use internal stairs multiple times a day. This also applies to children and the elderly people. Treads must therefore be both safe and comfortable to use. How to guarantee this convenience? First of all, taking care of the appropriate dimensions of the stairs.ymiary schodów.
Comfortable winder stairs ‒ dimensions that work
Let’s start by understanding what a winder staircase is. These are the ones we overcome by changing the direction in which we move. They can have different shapes (e.g. the letter L or the letter U), but what they have in common are the winder steps – a different shape than the classic, rectangular steps, and therefore also different dimensions.
The biggest advantages of winder stairs are:
- saving space ‒ they are especially useful when it comes to overcoming large storeys; they are often installed in the corners of buildings;
- universality of use ‒ they suit various types of interiors and various interior design styles, just match the finish to the décor; they can be installed in single-family homes, public buildings, as attic and basement stairs;
- safety ‒ they have the advantages of spiral stairs, but are more comfortable and safer to use;
- aesthetics ‒ due to their unique shape, they constitute a decorative element of the house.
The most popular ones include:
- single-winder stairs:
- with bottom winding ‒ viewed from above, they end with winder steps;
- with upper winding ‒ viewed from above, they begin with winder steps;
- L-shaped stairs ‒ the winder is at the bottom of the staircase, but after it there are a few more traditional steps;
- with a half-height winder.
- single-winder stairs:
- double-winder stairs.
You can order various types of stairs from our company. Comfortable winder stairs have dimensions adapted to the specifics of a particular interior, so it is best to draw them into the space in which they are to be located, taking into account the guidelines regarding the optimal length, width and depth of the steps. This is why it is worth choosing custom-made winder stairs ‒ individually designed: with one, two or even three winders. It all depends on the needs of our clients and the space they have available.

How to draw a winder staircase?
Good stairs start with good design. It is worth drawing in advance the wooden winder stairs you want or using a tool such as our configurator. What needs to be done step by step?
- Take measurements. Floor height, opening width – these are some of the data you will need.
- Calculate the number of steps.
- Decide where the winder will be located, and how many steps there will be before and after it.
Clients often ask how many winder steps there should be? Usually three, no more than four in one corner. The steps at their narrowest point should be no less than 10 cm deep (and even 12 cm is better). Shallower steps will adversely affect the comfort of using the stairs and can also be dangerous if the foot has insufficient space for support. An optimal inclination angle of 30-40 degrees is ideal.
Next, the designers draw plans based on which the carpenter will create a comfortable winder staircase for you. You can use our configurator, where you simply enter the appropriate data to visualize the stairs without having to meticulously draw them on paper or in a computer program.
